This 5th album, after 10 years of « Robersonian » adventures (2010-2020), resonates with the group’s well-worn research and renewal aesthetic since, as Raoul Ponchon once said « a warmed calf is better cold. » It is also a return to the groups experimental origins which marked the beginnings of the group.

Overshoot and Collapse is an album recorded live, in the group’s studio. In 2 short sessions, 5 hours in total, the group improvised around sketches of songs (without overdubs). So there is not here the usual deployment of additional arranging that feature on previous releases.

Here we are in the heart of a cauldron, in the spontaneous turmult and bubbling forth of newly exposed music. We witness the laying down and observance of reference points from the musicians – everyone is looking for their place and that’s what is interesting about this kind of record.

In this new album, Feu Robertson does not pretend to offer anything other than the conclusion of this recent article, regarding the group The Raconteurs, which underlined the ambiguity and the beauty that there was to rock in 2019: « It is maybe the greatest strength of this record: to resist the temptation of wandering modernity to focus on the essentials, a handful of instruments plugged into 220 volts « .

This dense and varied album, falling somewhere between ambient, noise and psyche rock, finds ground where the group plays with the plastic dimension of the music and interferes in the musings of the listener to allow them to drift.

Through swaying improvisations, explosive and crazy blues that remind us of the urgency of the recording, the ‘heavy’ crudity of sonic, cavernous and shrill deluges where hip-hop rhythms can make hippy bells meet or even the dissonant folk mixing with drones, Feu Robertson reaffirms the Velvets-ian soul of the group.

Ce 5ème album, après 10 ans d’aventures ‘robertsoniennes’ (2010-2020), résonne en écho à un parcours du groupe fondé sur la recherche et le renouvellement car, comme le disait Raoul Ponchon « le veau réchauffé est meilleur froid. » C’est ainsi un retour aux origines qui est effectué, par le travail expérimental et les recherches qui ont marqué les débuts du groupe.

Overshoot and Collapse est un album enregistré dans des conditions live, dans le studio du groupe. En 2 courtes sessions, soit 5 h au total, le groupe a improvisé (sans aucune prise ajoutée). Il n’y a donc pas ici le déploiement de tous les arrangements qui ont fait le son du groupe.

On est ici au cœur d’un chaudron, dans le bouillonnement spontané de la musique mise à nue. On assiste à des prises de repères de la part des musiciens, chacun cherche sa place et c’est cela qui est intéressant sur ce genre de disque.

Dans ce nouvel album, Feu Robertson ne prétend pas proposer autre chose que la conclusion de cet article récent, évoquant The Raconteurs, soulignant l’ambigüité et la beauté qu’il y avait de faire du rock en 2019 : « C’est peut-être la plus grande force de ce disque : résister à la tentation de la modernité ambulante pour se concentrer sur l’essentiel, soit une poignée d’instruments branchés sur du 220 volts ».

Cet album dense et varié, entre ambient, noise et rock psyché constitue un terrain où le groupe joue avec une dimension plastique de la musique et s’immisce dans les rêveries ‘dead maniennes’ de l’auditeur pour lui proposer une dérive.

A travers des improvisations chaloupées, des blues explosifs et déjantés qui rappellent l’urgence de l’enregistrement, la crudité ‘heavy’ des déluges soniques, caverneux et stridents où la rythmique hip-hop peut donner rendez-vous aux grelots hippies ou encore le folk dissonant qui se mélange aux drones, Feu Robertson réaffirme l’âme velvetienne du groupe.
